How to use placement groups for VPS

Step-by-step guide to using placement groups for VPS.

Placement groups let you control which hypervisors your VPS instances are placed on within the same location.
This gives you two main scenarios:

  • Minimal latency — all VPS in the group are placed on the same hypervisor (lowest possible ping and maximum data transfer speed between them).
  • High availability — VPS are distributed across different hypervisors (if one physical server fails, the others remain online).

The feature is available only when creating new VPS.
Adding existing orders to placement groups will be added in future updates.

Important

Placement groups work only within one location (e.g., only Germany or only the Netherlands).
It is impossible to create a group where some VPS are in Germany and others in the Netherlands.

How to create a placement group

  1. Go to the VPS order page.

  2. Select your configuration and location.

  3. In the "Placement Group" section, choose one of the options:

    • Not in a group — the VPS is placed on any available hypervisor (default).
    • Create placement group — creates a new group.

When choosing "Create placement group", fill in the fields:

  • Group name — any convenient name (e.g., "Frontend-Cluster", "HA-DB", or "Low-Latency-Project")
  • Location — automatically filled based on your selected location
  • Placement strategy:
    • Minimal latency — all VPS in the group will be placed on the same hypervisor
    • High availability — VPS will be distributed across different hypervisors

What happens if there is no free space in the group

When placing an order, the system checks whether there is enough capacity on suitable hypervisors to place the new VPS according to the selected policy.

If there is no space, you will be given a choice:

  • Cancel order
The order will not be created, and funds will be automatically refunded to your balance.
Choose this if strict compliance with the group policy is critical (e.g., you cannot place a database on a different hypervisor).

  • Create anyway
The order will be created regardless.
If there is no space in the group — the VPS will be placed outside the group (on any available hypervisor in this location).
Choose this if getting the server quickly is more important than strictly following the placement policy.

Important

We cannot guarantee 100% compliance with the group policy when ordering a large number of VPS at the same time (e.g., 100 instances).
In such cases, the system does its best to follow the rules, but some servers may be placed outside the group.

How to add an existing VPS to a placement group

At the moment, it is not possible to add an already created VPS to a placement group.
This feature will be added in upcoming updates.
