Setting up a DNS server on a Windows computer

Manual on how to change the DNS server on Windows OS

Public DNS from Google Public DNS and OpenDNS, for example, if you have:

  • Some sites stop loading.
  • Access to content is blocked for geographical reasons.
  • Your Internet Service Provider is restricting access to sites.

Google Public DNS will provide stable loading of sites. OpenDNS OpenDNS can offer advanced functionality: a built-in filter, phishing protection and a parental control function. This requires registration.

To configure, open "Control Panel → Network and Internet"

Next, go to "Network and Sharing Center" → "Change adapter settings"

Right-click on an existing connection and select "Properties"

Then select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click "Properties"

Let's check "Use the following DNS servers" and fill in the new settings

For Google Public DNS these are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 For OpenDNS it is 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
